Gospel Guitar - Strumming Introduction

Strumming is an important skill for the right hand. The aim is to make the strings vibrate EVENLY. Do NOT hit the strings but, rather like a harp player, draw out the beauty of the sound. you can strum with your THUMB or use a PICK if you have a steel-strung guitar.

The first indroductory style is 'a strong down stroke' from the bass string (E-6th)to the first string of the Guitar (E-1st). However you DONT need to play all the strings for all the chords. Do you need to know some detail? click here.

TIMING is a very important factor. First we are going to learn the 4/4(four-four)beat. Remember, 4/4 beat can take many forms and styles. Here, we are going to understand the timing use a very basic "down stroke" style. Try to understand and play perfectly.

Step 1: Count four : 1-2-3-4- and repeat(give equal interval between each beat)

Step 2: You could play this beat very slow, moderate or fast.

How to play ?

1.Put the E major chord with your left hand

2. Strum down, using Inroductory strumming, Whenever you see a down stroke.

3. Practise until you are perfect.

This is your first strumming style so dont think it childish. It is very important you to understand the basic strumming style and timing in order to understand and play the other strumming styles neatly.
